About Weld Lab Core

01

Lewis Caldwell started Weld Lab Core in 2014 after twelve years working in structural fabrication shops and a three-year stint doing shutdown maintenance on industrial plant. He had spent those years watching good welders rush fit-up because the schedule said so, and watching the same joints come back six months later. When he set up the workshop, the first rule was simple: the fit-up stage gets as much time as it needs. That rule has not changed in twelve years.

The shop is set up for a specific kind of work: jobs that need to be right, not just done. That means structural brackets for engineers who will sign off on them, custom architectural metalwork for clients who will look at it every day, and repair work on equipment that cannot afford to fail again. The range of processes in the shop. MIG, TIG, stick, plasma cutting, a press brake for light forming. Means the process gets chosen for the job rather than the other way around. Lewis does the welding himself. There is no subcontracting the actual fabrication.

Lewis Caldwell
Founder

Lewis Caldwell trained as a boilermaker and spent his first decade working in structural fabrication shops before moving into industrial shutdown maintenance, where the pressure to weld fast on live plant taught him exactly what he did not want to replicate. He founded Weld Lab Core in 2014 with a secondhand press brake, a TIG set he had owned since his apprenticeship, and a preference for jobs where the tolerance actually matters. He keeps a worn steel rule on the bench that he has used since his second year as an apprentice. Not for sentiment, but because it reads true. Outside the shop, he follows competitive powerlifting and applies roughly the same logic: position before load.
